During a preliminary roll call in Pangandaran District on Sunday, Nurofiq stated that the Ministry of Environment and the TNI had agreed to expand this initiative to seven other locations beyond Batukaras Beach.
He emphasized that such activities demonstrate the state’s commitment to addressing marine waste, which remains a significant issue in Indonesia.
The minister added that marine debris, regardless of its origin, poses a threat not only to wildlife and the environment but also to human health.
Economically, he explained, such waste can pollute beaches and deter both domestic and international tourists.
He also noted that marine debris can contaminate water, ultimately posing a danger to humans through seafood consumption, as marine animals may be exposed to hazardous substances in the water.
Nurofiq then underscored the importance of Indonesia, as an archipelagic nation, making every effort to combat marine waste, particularly plastic pollution.
On the same occasion, TNI Commander General Subiyanto stressed the need to raise public awareness about the importance of proper waste management to prevent environmental degradation.
He also noted that the TNI has been actively involved in initiatives aimed at addressing Indonesia’s waste challenges.
General Subiyanto expressed his gratitude to Minister Nurofiq for initiating the beach clean-up as part of the National Waste Awareness Day (HPSN) celebration, observed annually on February 21.
Furthermore, the general reaffirmed that the TNI is ready to collaborate with the government in carrying out similar initiatives in other locations.
