Jakarta (ANTARA) - Director of Zakat and Waqf Empowerment of the Ministry of Religious Affairs Waryono Abdul Ghafur underscored the need to improve the quality of waqf (Islamic endowment) administrators in Indonesia to optimize waqf management.

In his remarks at the Waqf Talk 2025 event in Jakarta on Thursday, he noted that so far, not many waqf administrators in Indonesia have a strong educational background related to waqf.

"Those with a pesantren (Islamic boarding school) background are rare," he pointed out.

Ghafur expressed optimism that the waqf reception would reach a large amount, surpassing Rp200 trillion (around US$12.24 billion), in line with improving the people's piety.

In this regard, he highlighted the importance of improving the quality of waqf administrators to optimize the waqf reception potential.

On the same occasion, the Chair of the Productive Waqf Forum, Rayan Asa Luminaries, also spoke about the quality of waqf administrators, saying that the level of professionalism of waqf administrators in Indonesia is still low.

He cited a survey conducted in eleven provinces showing that merely 16 percent of the 500 waqf administrators worked full-time. Meanwhile, the remaining 84 percent worked on a part-time basis.

According to Luminaries, this situation affects the management of waqf, causing it to be hindered or less than optimal.

"If that is the case, I am sure that completing the waqf certificate alone will take at least one year," he remarked.
