Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Ministry of Industry will provide training in the processing of leather and footwear products to Sri Lankan industrial workers, in collaboration with the ATK Yogyakarta Polytechnic.

Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita informed here on Thursday that based on data from the World Footwear Yearbook, Indonesia is one of the top five footwear producers: it churned out 807 million pairs in 2023, with 445 million pairs exported to various countries.

"This shows that the domestic workforce and footwear industry have high productivity and capability," he pointed out.

"The role of competent human resources is one of the factors that triggers the performance of the national leather and footwear industry to successfully compete in the international arena," he added.

The Indonesian footwear industry has managed to compete in the global market due to its high-quality products, Kartasasmita said.

The sector is growing on the back of a fairly high demand, thereby making a significant contribution to the national economy, he added.

The head of the ministry's Industrial Human Resources Development Agency, Masrokhan, said that the training aims to improve the capability of industrial workers to compete at the global level.

"This collaboration with Sri Lanka can improve the expertise of national industrial human resources. It is also an opportunity to show best practices in Indonesia to the world," he added.

Fully funded by the Sri Lanka Export Development Board, the training will be held for two weeks in August 2025.

Before the training starts, prospective participants will undergo a pre-test to determine their level of competence, according to director of the ATK Yogyakarta Polytechnic, Sonny Taufan.

As part of the series of training, visits to related industries will also be scheduled to introduce the participants to the production system in Indonesia and give them a chance to study it.

The ATK Yogyakarta Polytechnic also helped organize tanning training for human resources from the Tanzanian industry from 2022 to 2024. The training included online training, offline training at the polytechnic, and expert dispatch to Tanzania.
