"We are preparing a new organizational structure to boost energy transition efforts to be faster," he said at an information dissemination event on the ESDM Minister's Regulation Number 5 of 2025 in Jakarta on Tuesday.
The new directorate will be carved out of the Directorate of Various New and Renewable Energy, which is currently responsible for 10 types of renewable energy sources.
They are hydropower, mini hydropower, micro hydropower, solar power, wind power, marine current power, waste to energy, rooftop solar power, floating solar power, and coal gasification.
"We are thinking of splitting it up so that there will be a new director there," Kusdiana informed.
Considering that the direction of the energy transition tends to be related to electricity affairs, the ministry is planning to place the new directorate under the Directorate General of Electricity.
He further underlined that the government remains committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and contributing to efforts to tackle climate change.
He said that achieving net-zero emissions sooner than 2060 will improve Indonesia's competitiveness on the global stage.
"Many have said that if we do not promote renewable energy, our competitiveness will decline," he said.
He cited the rapid economic development in Vietnam, saying that the reason for the large number of industries moving to Vietnam is that the country can provide cleaner energy than Indonesia.
"Nevertheless, we have the opportunity to reclaim that position," he said.
