Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Yuliot Tanjung, has informed that Indonesia still needs around 2 million tons more methanol per year to implement the 50 percent biodiesel mix or B50 program in 2026.

"We are currently pursuing the implementation of B50 in 2026," he said in Jakarta on Friday.

Tanjung noted that the availability of methanol in the country is still limited. To implement B50, Indonesia needs around 2.3 million tons of methanol per year, while domestic production is only around 300 thousand tons.

"That means 2 million tons are still imported. Thus, we are pushing the bioethanol national strategic project (PSN) in Bojonegoro. That is what we are pursuing," he said.

Earlier, the deputy minister informed that to make 19.73 million kiloliters of B50 biodiesel, 17.9 million tons of palm oil and an additional 2.3 million hectares of land are needed.

To produce 23.67 million kiloliters of B60 biodiesel, 21.5 million tons of palm oil and 3.5 million hectares of additional oil palm plantation areas are needed.

Meanwhile, to produce 39.45 million kiloliters of B100 biodiesel, 35.9 million tons of palm oil and additional 4.6 million hectares of land are needed.

Tanjung said that for the additional land, the government is opening up the possibility of utilizing land owned by the community and cooperatives to meet the needs for B50-B100 implementation.

The incentives that have been prepared, he added, are approximately worth Rp47.1 trillion (around US$2.88 billion). The current palm oil needs are around 14.3 million tons.

The Indonesian government recently started the implementation of B40 biodiesel on January 1, 2025.
