As stated in his office’s release in Jakarta on Saturday, he explained that the teachers would be required to meet certain criteria and pass a series of tests before being placed in schools located in their regions of domicile.
He elaborated that the government would provide selected teachers with special additional training sessions to ensure their readiness to serve in a People’s School.
Yusuf highlighted that Mohammad Nuh, the minister of education and culture between 2009 and 2014, had been appointed to lead the teacher recruitment process.
“We also have experts from the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education and the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology to assist us,” the minister stated.
Shifting focus to student admissions, the official emphasized that the government would prioritize children from families categorized as poor or extremely poor in the National Single Social and Economic Data (DTSEN).
Additionally, he highlighted that free public schools would give priority to children from families living in their surrounding areas.
The minister also noted that some other requirements would be put in place to ensure that the schools only serve students who will complete their studies, thereby reducing the risk of dropouts.
He further stated that the plan also involves organizing an orientation activity for prospective students of the People’s Schools, which will adopt a boarding school concept with free education and daily food services.
Yusuf assured that the government has been working intensively to prepare for the program, mentioning that specialized teams have been established for specific tasks.
He also pointed out that regional governments have responded positively to the national program, with some even proposing locations to establish the schools.
