Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Minister of Culture, Fadli Zon, has praised the selection of the film Pangku as one of five projects chosen for the 23rd Hong Kong Asia Film (HAF) Goes to Cannes Program.

This selection paves the way for the film to be screened at the world’s most renowned film festival.

"The selection of Pangku for the HAF Goes to Cannes program highlights the quality and creativity of Indonesian filmmakers, who are capable of competing on the international stage," Zon said in a statement issued on Thursday.

HAF is part of the Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF) Industry Project Market, recognized as Asia’s leading film financing platform.

The HAF Goes to Cannes Program selects outstanding projects for screening at the Cannes Film Festival and provides filmmakers with opportunities to collaborate with global distribution partners.

"Thank you to the Indonesian film community for bringing Indonesia to the world stage. The participation of 14 Indonesian exhibitors at Hong Kong Filmart 2025 is a significant step in expanding networks and opening global opportunities for Indonesian films," Zon said.

Directed by actor Reza Rahadian, Pangku follows Sartika, a pregnant young woman who leaves her city in search of a better future for her child.

After relocating to Pantura (Java’s North Coast region), she meets Maya, a coffee shop owner who initially offers help but later manipulates her into working as a waitress at a kopi pangku shop, where she sits on men’s laps (pangku) as they drink coffee.

Sartika’s life takes a turn when she meets Hadi, a fish distributor truck driver, and falls in love.

Produced by Gambar Gerak, Pangku is inspired by traditions in the Pantura region and offers a unique perspective on social dynamics with a strong artistic approach.

"Today, we once again celebrate an achievement with the selection of Pangku for the HAF Goes to Cannes Program. Congratulations to Reza and the Gambar Gerak team on this proud accomplishment," Zon remarked.

Indonesia’s presence at Hong Kong Filmart 2025 is further proof that the national film industry is increasingly recognized as a major player in the Asian region, he said.

This achievement has also paved the way for broader collaboration with the global film industry, he added.
