Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology Stella Christie supports the steps in conducting interdisciplinary research on technology to support the health of the elderly.

"This research is very much related to my personal research. It is enjoyable to discuss topics relevant to what I am doing," Christie noted in a statement here on Friday.

The deputy minister highlighted the importance of lifestyle choices for the elderly in supporting their health.

She referenced a 2014 study that found elderly individuals who had autonomy in activities like plant care and entertainment selection lived longer than those whose daily routines were entirely managed by others.

"The perception of having control over their life is one of the important factors in elderly health," she stated.

Hence, she lauded the commitment to conducting elderly health research realized through the inauguration of the Center for Aging Wellness and Life Science Integrated Facilities.

According to Christie, the launch of the facility is a step towards developing science and technology-based research that has a direct impact on public welfare.

She emphasized that science and technology play a crucial role in supporting economic growth and national welfare.

"President Prabowo Subianto has emphasized that no nation can prosper without advanced science and technology. Investment in this area is the key to Indonesia's economic growth," she affirmed.

She noted that while Indonesia currently enjoys a demographic advantage with an average population age of 27 years, the proportion of elderly citizens is expected to rise significantly over the next four decades.

This demographic shift necessitates immediate research and policy planning to secure the future welfare of older adults.
