Speaking in a press conference at his office in Jakarta on Friday, Purwagandhi stated that the government deems it necessary to echo this safety appeal, as the number of people traveling on motorbikes is projected to rise during this year's Eid al-Fitr homecoming season.
"It is true that we are paying close attention to those returning to their hometowns using motorcycles. We would like to ask you not to opt for motorbikes, though we recognize our lack of authority to ban such a practice," he told the public.
The minister then specifically addressed people with no other option but to rely on their motorbikes, reminding them to ensure that their vehicles are dependable and roadworthy before setting out on their homecoming journey.
He also stressed the importance of these individuals driving responsibly and adhering to all traffic regulations to ensure a smooth trip and minimize the risk of accidents.
"It is equally important not to exceed the maximum capacity of a motorcycle, which is two persons, and refrain from carrying excessive items," he told the public.
Additionally, Purwagandhi reminded homecoming travelers, especially those riding motorbikes, to maintain their physical condition before and during their trips, urging them not to hesitate to take breaks.
"We have been coordinating with the Ministry of Religious Affairs to make mosques along homecoming routes available for travelers to rest. We cannot overlook the need for measures to prevent accidents," he remarked.
The Ministry of Transportation has announced its homecoming trip program for this year, offering free shipments of motorcycles on trucks and trains, in addition to seats for road, air, and sea transportation for travelers.
