"The proposal for special Eid al-Fitr remission is also an effort in rehabilitation to prepare inmates for reintegration into society," Head of the East Java Regional Office of the Directorate General of Corrections, Kadiyono, said here on Sunday.
He explained that this remission proposal could enhance the motivation of inmates to participate in rehabilitation programs in correctional facilities and better prepare them for their return to society.
"In addition, it is also aimed to reduce the burden on correctional institutions in East Java, which are experiencing an occupancy rate exceeding capacity by 105 percent," he stated.
He mentioned that the number of inmates proposed for remission this year is around 75 percent of the total number of inmates who are classified as convicts.
While the proposed inmates for remission mostly still have remaining prison sentences, if approved by the Directorate General of Corrections, approximately 81 inmates may be released immediately.
"The majority of the inmates we proposed are involved in general crimes, with 7,612 individuals. However, while the number of those involved in specific offenses is smaller at 7,474, the cases of drug abuse and trafficking proposed for remission are also dominant," he said.
To detail, inmates involved in drug cases dominate the remission proposal with 7,235 individuals, followed by those involved in corruption cases with 184 individuals, as well as 20 individuals for illegal logging and four individuals for terrorism cases.
