According to the ministry's director of infectious diseases, Ina Agustina Isturini, the figure showed an increase compared to 2023, when 77 percent of cases were identified and 88 percent of the total estimated 1.060 million patients received treatment.
"Although there has been an improvement, TB remains a challenge as our identification has not met the expected target," she said on Monday.
The government is targeting case discovery of up to 90 percent, as well as 100 percent treatment for drug-sensitive TB and 90 percent for drug-resistant TB.
"This is a challenge, and we must find strategies and innovations to address it," she stressed.
Ina said that eradicating TB in Indonesia is an absolute must. This is because based on the TB elimination road map for Indonesia, which is in line with the global target, the incidence of TB in the country must decrease by 50 percent by 2025.
This year, TB incidence in Indonesia has been recorded at 388 per 100,000 population with 49 deaths per 100 thousand population. It is expected to slide to 163 per 100 thousand population, with the mortality rate decreasing by 75 percent.
"It is hoped that by 2030, the incidence can decrease by 80 percent and the mortality rate will also decrease. If it is now 49 per 100,000 population, it is expected to become 6 per 100,000 population," she said.
To accelerate the eradication of TB, Indonesia, along with several countries, is developing a new global TB vaccine called the TB M72 Vaccine. The vaccine is currently in the clinical trial stage and is expected to be launched in 2028.
The development of the vaccine is also a concrete implementation of the Presidential Regulation Number 67 of 2021 concerning TB Control.
In addition, the Ministry of Health is trying to intensify TB screening, which is included in the free health checks program.
"It is hoped that with the TB vaccine, the cases will decrease in 2030. The death rate is also expected to decrease from 49 per 100,000 population to 6 per 100,000 population," Ina said.
"And the TB vaccine can also prevent people with a TB background from getting TB. So, this TB vaccine is one of our extraordinary hopes to be able to reduce TB cases in Indonesia as sharply as possible," she added.
