Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto has announced the Indonesian government's decision to become a member of the New Development Bank (NDB), a multilateral development bank established by the five founding member states of the BRICS group.

"We have been invited to join the New Development Bank, and our financial team has assessed this opportunity. After consulting with the team, the Indonesian government has decided to join the New Development Bank," he informed at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday.

He made the announcement during a joint press conference with the president of the NDB, Dilma Vana Rousseff, who has encouraged Indonesia to become a member of the bank on multiple occasions.

It should be noted that the decision follows Indonesia's success in gaining a full BRICS membership earlier this year.

While delivering his speech, Prabowo highlighted that the NDB was established with the aim of financially supporting sustainable development projects, particularly in developing countries.

He noted that the multilateral development bank was founded with an initial authorized capital of USD100 billion, set by the five initial members of BRICS—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

The NDB began operating in 2014 and is headquartered in Shanghai, China, with a regional office in South Africa.

Prabowo also shared details of his 1.5-hour bilateral meeting with Rousseff, who once served as the president of Brazil.

He described the meeting as an intensive exchange of views on the Indonesian government's short-term, medium-term, and long-term programs.

He said that the meeting also helped him understand that Indonesia and Brazil share similar experiences.

While concluding his remarks, the Indonesian head of state expressed his gratitude to Rousseff for inviting Indonesia to become a part of the NDB.

"I have decided for Indonesia to join the New Development Bank and follow the procedures and meet the requirements. I would like to once again convey my deep gratitude for inviting us to the NDB," he told Rousseff.
