Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto signed the Government Regulation on the Governance of the Implementation of Electronic Systems in Child Protection, which includes provisions to limit children's social media use and restrict access to harmful digital content.

On Friday, the president announced the ratification of the regulation in front of approximately one hundred elementary, junior high, and high school students, teacher representatives, and child protection figures at the Merdeka Palace.

The head of state remarked that the government regulation was suggested by Communication and Digital Minister Meutya Hafid, who reported the plan to draft the regulation on January 13, 2025.

"I immediately agreed to all the suggestions. We should make efforts to protect our children. I said to continue (the plan) and consult with all parties. This effort has also been pioneered by several other countries to protect the children," Prabowo remarked.

The president highlighted the importance of ensuring that Indonesian children develop in a healthy manner, both physically and mentally.

Meanwhile, Minister Hafid said the government held seven focus group discussions (FGDs) and accommodated more than 200 inputs from various groups, both domestically and abroad before ratifying the regulation on child protection.

Hafid then expressed her gratitude to all ministries and institutions involved in drafting the regulation, including the Coordinating Ministry for Political and Security Affairs and the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture.

She also thanked the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, the Ministry of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection (PPPA), the Ministry of State Secretary, the Cabinet Secretariat, the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI), the Indonesian Child Protection Agency (LPAI), the Center for Education and Policy Studies, the Indonesian Pediatrician Association, the Indonesian Psychological Association, Save the Children, and UNICEF for their contributions.
