Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Presidential Staff Office (KSP) stated that the Indonesian government had anticipated the United States' (US) 32 percent import tariff on Indonesia early, which US President Donald Trump described as "reciprocal."

Acting Deputy II of KSP Edy Priyono conveyed this during an online coordination meeting on food supply and price stability held after the 2025 Eid al-Fitr on Thursday.

"We already knew that it would lead to this. What we just found out is that our reciprocal tariff stands at 64 percent, and after the discount, it becomes 32 percent," he explained.

However, Prioyono said he could not confirm whether President Prabowo Subianto had issued any special instructions regarding Trump's reciprocal tariff policy.

Nevertheless, he acknowledged that Presidential Chief of Staff A.M. Putranto had directed an analysis of the policy's impact on Indonesia, which the KSP has since conducted.

He further clarified that Trump's so-called reciprocal tariffs are imposed on products from multiple countries, not solely Indonesia. Hence, in theory, a decline in demand from the US is expected.

Although the tariff varies between countries, it is expected to not disrupt Indonesia's relative competitiveness with other countries, curbing potential negative effects.

According to Priyono, the weakening of the rupiah against the US dollar could bolster export performance, though it will burden importers.

He reiterated that early mitigation and anticipatory measures have been implemented in the hope that the policy will not have a significant impact on Indonesia.

"Of course, we are doing our best, including to possibly conduct lobbying and so on," he remarked.

Earlier, President Trump, on Wednesday, announced "reciprocal" tariffs on around 60 countries, including Indonesia.

Indonesia was not the only Southeast Asian country hit by the tariff; fellow ASEAN members Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, and Malaysia received 49, 46, 36, and 24 percent tariffs, respectively.

The Trump administration also imposed a 10 percent baseline tariff on imports from all countries.

The 10-percent universal tariff will be enforced on Saturday (April 5), while the reciprocal tariffs on around 60 countries will apply on Wednesday (April 9).
