Anwar described the meeting with Prabowo, whom he called an "old friend," as having taken place "under the atmosphere of blessed Eid al-Fitr." He hosted the meeting at Seri Perdana, his official residence.
"We discussed important regional issues, including the effects of the new tariffs imposed by the United States on ASEAN countries, apart from our collective actions in providing humanitarian aid for the people in Myanmar who suffered from the recent earthquake," Anwar stated on social media, Sunday.
Neither the Malaysian PM nor Prabowo disclosed further details about the outcome of their discussions regarding US tariffs on Southeast Asian countries or other topics.
However, Anwar reiterated his commitment to maintaining and intensifying bilateral relations between Indonesia and Malaysia.
"Let the spirit of Eid al-Fitr strengthen the brotherhood and cooperation between Malaysia and Indonesia in the name of regional security and prosperity," the Malaysian PM remarked.
Photos shared by the Malaysian Prime Minister's Office show Prabowo, dressed in a brown batik shirt and kopiah headgear, being welcomed by Anwar at the front porch before proceeding to the meeting.
The two leaders were later seen conversing during a banquet, and after their meeting, Anwar bid farewell to Prabowo with an embrace as he departed from Seri Perdana, as depicted in the other pictures.
President Prabowo was accompanied by Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya and Personal Secretary Rizky Irmansyah during his visit to meet the Malaysian PM.
US President Donald Trump announced a near-universal tariff on products imported from foreign countries to the United States on April 2, with Indonesia and Malaysia being no exception.
The 10-percent basic tariff was enforced effective April 5, while the reciprocal tariffs against Indonesia and dozens of other countries will apply starting Wednesday (April 9).
Indonesia faces a 32 percent tariff, while Malaysia is subject to 24 percent. Meanwhile, fellow ASEAN members -- Cambodia, Vietnam, and Thailand -- face higher rates of 49, 46, and 36 percent, respectively.
