"We will open negotiations with the US. We will convey our intention to maintain good relations, and we also want fair relations," he remarked on Monday.
Prabowo noted that the reciprocal tariffs imposed by the US on several countries were a decision taken by the US leader to bolster industrial growth in his country.
Hence, in response, he stated that Indonesia would also prioritize similar measures during negotiations, focusing on safeguarding the interests of Indonesians.
Should an agreement be reached during the ongoing negotiations, and reasonable justifications provided for the tariffs, Prabowo assured that Indonesia would respect the decision.
"The US prioritizes the interests of their people. We also think about our people. There is no need to be worried. We believe in our own strength," he affirmed.
The head of state expressed optimism about Indonesia's bright and promising future despite challenges, emphasizing the importance of collective resilience, including in facing dynamic global geopolitical turmoil.
"Even if there are challenges, we will face them, bravely. There may be a few times when we fall, but we will face them by rising well," he emphasized.
Earlier, on April 2, US President Donald Trump announced a tariff increase of at least 10 percent on several countries, including Indonesia, for goods exported to the country.
Indonesia ranks eighth with an export value of 32 percent. Some 60 countries will face reciprocal tariffs equal to half the duties they impose on US goods.
Trump said the reciprocal tariffs were aimed at creating more jobs at home.
Trump and his administration asserted that the US has been "harmed" by many countries due to unfair trade practices.
