At the meeting, BNN head Marthinus Hukom and Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung emphasized the importance of using a comprehensive and collaborative approach to handle the issue.
"Jakarta is currently the center of illegal drug trafficking, with an abuser prevalence rate of 3.3 percent, or equal to 132 thousand people," Hukom noted at the meeting, according to a statement released here on Saturday.
He also highlighted the social conditions in densely populated areas of Jakarta, which often serve as pockets of illegal drug trafficking.
Head of the Jakarta BNN Office, Nurhadi Yuwono, revealed that based on data and mapping, there are 112 drug-prone areas in the province.
As part of handling measures, four clinics are known to have provided rehabilitation services to 1,150 drug abusers in the province so far.
Those clinics have also implemented several programs such as anti-drug declarations, social services, dissemination of information, and community-based intervention programs.
Anung expressed his appreciation and full support for the steps taken by the BNN and the Jakarta BNN. He affirmed that he will involve community health centers in Jakarta to provide outpatient rehabilitation services to drug abusers, whom he described as victims of drug lords and dealers.
He also emphasized the importance of early detection of drug abuse, saying he plans to involve the community, including youth organizations, in prevention efforts.
Friday's meeting was held to strengthen synergy between the central and regional governments in efforts to prevent and eradicate drug abuse and illicit trafficking in Jakarta province.
Given the strong commitment of both parties, it is hoped that efforts to eradicate drugs in the province will not only help reduce the prevalence of drug abuse, but also address the roots of social problems that tend to stimulate illicit drug trafficking.
