“The Love-Based Curriculum brings (new) spirit to the (existing) curriculum. It is not a revision but a new approach that is more character-driven, spiritual, and contextual,” the ministry's Director of Madrasah Curriculum, Facilities, Institutional Affairs, and Student Affairs, Nyayu Khodijah, remarked here on Wednesday.
Khodijah elaborated that this curriculum emphasizes the importance of creating a learning environment rooted in compassion, including love for the environment.
Actions related to environmental awareness, such as tree planting and nature conservation, are considered integral to the students' learning process.
Khodijah explained that the development of the Love-Based curriculum began in January 2025 and has gone through five stages of revision.
The public trial has been conducted in stages, with thousands of participants from various backgrounds, including madrasah heads, teachers, supervisors, academics, and national figures, being involved.
According to Khodijah, the Religious Affairs Ministry has prepared a roadmap for the gradual implementation of the Love-Based Curriculum.
Teacher training and workshop for this curriculum will take place from May to June 2025, with limited implementation beginning in July 2025.
“Madrasahs will serve as trial sites for the Love-Based curriculum. (However,) this is not only for madrasah but also for Islamic religion education teachers in public schools, as well as ustaz and ustazah in pesantren (Islamic boarding schools),” she stated.
She remarked that evaluation of this curriculum will continue until the end of 2026 to ensure its effectiveness and readiness for broader implementation.
"Moreover, the public trial builds a sense of belonging among all stakeholders. This curriculum emerges from collaboration, not a unilateral decision,” she added.
