Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government held a meeting on Wednesday with key figures from workers' unions to discuss President Prabowo Subianto's plan to establish a special task force aimed at addressing issues related to layoffs.

State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi and Cabinet Secretary Teddi Indra Wijaya represented the government at the meeting.

Jumhur Hidayat, chairperson of the All-Indonesia Workers Union Confederation (KSPSI), who also attended the meeting, said on Thursday that the discussion covered several key points related to worker protection.

"First, we exchanged views on companies that may be considering layoffs. Second, we discussed measures to prevent layoffs, such as reducing working hours," he said.

"Third, we explored the possibility of the government offering incentives to companies to discourage hasty layoffs."

"Fourth, we discussed how to ensure that BPJS can optimally distribute funds allocated for job loss security (JKP)," he said, referring to BPJS Ketenagakerjaan, the national social security agency for workers.

"Fifth, we emphasized the importance of ensuring that severance pay is provided in accordance with applicable regulations or work agreements."

Hidayat added that he urged the government to identify potential job opportunities for laid-off workers and to offer capacity-building programs.

"Finally, we, the workers, requested that the layoff task force include representatives from BPJS Ketenagakerjaan, employment experts, and other relevant stakeholders," he said.

Another participant, Said Iqbal, president of the Confederation of Indonesian Workers Union (KSPI), said the meeting also addressed preparations for this year’s May Day commemoration, scheduled for May 1 in Jakarta.

President Prabowo is expected to join hundreds of thousands of workers at the event.

In an Instagram post, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR) Sufmi Dasco Ahmad described the meeting as a forum for exchanging insights on actions needed to mitigate the impact of layoffs on workers.
