Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto has signed Law Number 3 of 2025, which amends Law Number 34 of 2004 concerning the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi announced on Thursday.

The revised law, which took effect on March 26, places TNI defense policy and strategy under the authority of the Ministry of Defense, while military force deployment remains under the president’s command.

The law introduces several key changes, including the expansion of the TNI’s core duties, new provisions regarding the placement of military personnel in government institutions, and adjustments to retirement ages.

Article 7 outlines a new provision that authorizes the TNI to conduct military operations other than war. These include tackling cyberthreats, securing vital strategic infrastructure, assisting local governments, and protecting national interests abroad.

Meanwhile, Article 47 establishes a legal framework for active military personnel to serve in civilian institutions such as the Attorney General’s Office, the Supreme Court, and the National Counter-Terrorism Agency. These placements must be based on principles of inter-agency coordination, transparency, and accountability.

The law also extends the retirement age for TNI soldiers. Enlisted and non-commissioned officers can now serve until the age of 55, while junior and senior commissioned officers can serve until 58. For four-star officers, the maximum retirement age is 63, with a possible two-year extension depending on organizational needs.
