Landslides across Tana Toraja District, South Sulawesi Province, have prompted the district government to declare a 14-day emergency response period, according to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB).
In an official statement quoted here on Friday, Head of BNPB's Center of Disaster Data, Information, and Communication, Abdul Muhari, stated that the emergency status is intended to enable the central and regional governments to distribute aid and accelerate recovery efforts.
He explained that this emergency period follows landslides that struck three villages across Bonggakaradeng Sub-district on Wednesday (April 16) afternoon, following high-intensity rain, which triggered land movements on unstable hillsides.
"Three individuals with severe injuries have been transported to Laki Hospital, while six victims suffering minor injuries are receiving treatment at Buakayu Community Health Center," he remarked.
In addition to causing injuries, he noted that the disaster significantly damaged at least two homes and one house of worship.
Muhari then cited a report from the Tana Toraja Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), noting that the local government had initiated emergency measures in collaboration with the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and National Police (Polri).
The BNPB official also urged residents and authorities across regions to stay alert for potential hydrometeorological disasters, especially those related to water.
He stressed the importance of monitoring daily weather forecasts, ensuring the adequacy and cleanliness of drainage canals and watersheds, and preparing necessary tools and logistics for disaster response.
"It is crucial for people living near watersheds or hillsides to seek safety if rain lasts more than an hour and visibility drops below 100 meters," he cautioned the public.
