“It is true that the event organizers have invited the president, who has expressed his intention to attend the May Day celebrations,” he noted in a statement on Wednesday.
Hadi, who also serves as President Prabowo’s spokesperson, emphasized that the president’s presence highlights the government’s appreciation for the contribution of Indonesian laborers in driving national economic growth.
“The president and the government regard workers as a key and integral part of our national economy. Therefore, President Prabowo sees it as essential for the government, employers, and workers to align their efforts,” he stated.
The minister affirmed that the president views synergy among these three stakeholders as crucial for building the foundation of Indonesia’s economy in a sustainable way.
The Confederation of Indonesian Trade Unions (KSPI), the organizer of the upcoming event, plans to spotlight six key labor issues, including the abolition of outsourcing, the establishment of a Task Force on Termination of Employment, and the realization of fair wages.
The remaining three issues relate to legislative demands, including the passing of the Domestic Worker Protection Bill, the Asset Forfeiture Bill, and a new Employment Law.
KSPI President Said Iqbal stated on April 24 that around 200 thousand workers from Jakarta, Bogor, Tangerang, Depok, Bekasi, Karawang, Purwakarta, Serang, and Cilegon are expected to participate in the event.
Additionally, workers in at least 30 provinces across Indonesia will hold similar May Day commemorations in their respective regions, featuring speeches and demonstrations focused on labor concerns.
“The number of workers participating in the May Day celebrations exceeds 1.2 million nationwide, according to reports from the regions,” Iqbal remarked.
