Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Foreign Minister Sugiono emphasized that Israel's continued violations and disregard for its international obligations had cost the Palestinian people their rights to self-determination.

"Israel's failure to fulfill its obligations has prevented the Palestinian people from exercising their basic rights as a nation, including the right to self-determination," Sugiono stated in his press statement on Thursday after delivering Indonesia's advisory opinion before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Wednesday (April 30).

The minister underscored that Palestinians have the right to live peacefully in their homeland and to determine their political, socioeconomic, and cultural future.

Sugiono noted that the Palestinian people are endowed with the right to self-determination, as recognized in numerous United Nations (UN) resolutions.

"The court has also recognized such rights in its decisions, including on the ICJ legal opinions in 2004 and 2024," Sugiono stated, adding that he has highlighted this before the ICJ judges.

The minister further pointed out that Israel's failure to meet its international obligations "not only caused suffering for the Palestinian people but also undermines the exercise of basic rights that should be guaranteed by international laws."

Hence, Indonesia called on the ICJ to issue a new decision addressing Israel's failure to fulfil its obligations as a UN member and as the occupying power in Palestine.

"I emphasized to the ICJ that an advisory opinion must be issued and that the rights of the Palestinian people, including their right to self-determination, must be protected," Sugiono remarked.

The foreign minister highlighted that Indonesia's participation in the ICJ proceedings reflects its unwavering support for the Palestinian people, a stance that Indonesia has consistently voiced in various international forums and bilateral meetings.

He also expected inputs from the Indonesian government and other parties to help ICJ judges deliver a just decision that will provide much-needed guidance in enforcing international laws and mitigating the humanitarian catastrophe suffered by the Palestinian people.
