“We are starting the one million family planning acceptors program from Tangerang, Banten,” Minister of Population and Family Development Wihaji stated here on Monday.
He explained that the program prioritizes the use of intrauterine devices (IUDs), also commonly known as spiral contraception.
He explained that the IUD is a T-shaped contraceptive device inserted into the uterus to prevent pregnancy either by blocking sperm from reaching the egg or by altering the uterine lining to prevent implantation.
To achieve the program's target, Minister Wihaji noted that community health cadres would engage the public to provide education about the program.
In addition, all midwives across Indonesia have been instructed to raise awareness about the importance of planned pregnancies, including maintaining appropriate intervals between births.
“This program aims to promote good planning within families and support overall health. Therefore, the health cadres will be responsible for educating the community. The ministry will also conduct an approach by opening family planning services during public events," Wihaji explained.
For instance, on May 7, the ministry will hold services during a social event at a factory.
"This service will target female workers,” he stated.
According to the minister, public awareness about the importance of family planning has improved, though further education remains necessary.
“Having children too late or with too short an interval is not ideal. That is why we are continuing to provide proper understanding and education,” he added.
