The provincial government of Jakarta plans to deploy officers from its Public Security and Order Agency (Satpol PP) to protect residents from thuggery.
Deputy Governor of Jakarta Rano Karno noted that this measure aligns with President Prabowo Subianto's instruction to curb the rise of harmful behavior carried out by civilian groups resembling thugs.
"Mr. President and the police chief have issued an instruction, pushing for action against thuggery," he remarked in South Jakarta on Sunday.
Earlier on Friday (May 9), State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi highlighted that President Prabowo had raised concerns about the recent increase in reports of anti-social acts committed by individuals posing as community organizations.
“The president and the government are genuinely concerned about this issue,” he remarked at the Presidential Palace, Jakarta.
Hadi noted that the president is coordinating with General Attorney Sanitiar Burhanuddin and National Police Chief (Polri) General Listyo Sigit Prabowo to deal with problematic mass organizations.
"The government will give zero tolerance for criminal acts, and legal prosecution is an option," he said.
Moreover, the minister highlighted that the government had set up an integrated task force dedicated to tightening the noose around rogue organizations that undermine public order and harm the investment climate.
This task force is working under the Coordinating Ministry for Political and Security Affairs.
Meanwhile, the Polri had cracked down on over three thousand thug-related cases since the launch of a nationwide anti-thuggery operation on May 1 under the command of Chief Prabowo.
Head of Polri's Public Relations Division, Inspector General of Police Sandi Nugroho, explained on Friday that this operation targets extortion, illegal levies, threats, destruction of public facilities, mob violence, blackmail, incitement, defamation, hoaxes, hate speeches, and fraud.
In Jakarta, this operation is focused on maintaining order and security at markets, bus terminals, ports, train stations, and certain residential areas.
