"We have arrested 1,766 linked to thuggery and 344 of them have been processed while the rest is being recorded and given counseling," National Police head of public relations Inspector General Saud Usman said here on Tuesday.
The biggest arrests were made in Jakarta reaching 1,048 people with 159 of them being processed and 889 others given counseling, followed by Lampung, East Java and Central Java.
"The operations against thuggery are not restricted but referred to regional commands` decision," he said.
Saud said the operations were aimed at making public security and order to remain conducive and for the purpose all regional police commands had been ordered to improve their performance.
The National Police head of public information bureau, Brigadier General Mochammad Taufik, said earlier that the operations against thuggery were regional in nature done through preventive activities such as patrolling locations prone to security problems.
In the effort he said the police also conducted coordination with community and religious leaders to appeal to people to avoid involvement in thuggery.(*)
