At Nalapraya's funeral ceremony at the Pencak Silat Training Center, Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII) Park, East Jakarta, on Tuesday afternoon, Prabowo said he should be remembered for his lifelong dedication and exemplary character.
"He was a national hero who took part in Indonesia's war of independence. He rose through the ranks from a soldier to a general," he added.
Prabowo remembered Nalapraya as a diligent and humble individual with great enthusiasm for promoting Indonesian traditional martial art Pencak Silat on both the national and international stage.
He also underlined the importance of Pencak Silat as a national cultural heritage, describing it as an essential part of the nation's identity and strength.
"Pencak Silat plays a vital role in preserving the Indonesian national character. It is not only a martial art, but also a form of national defense and a reflection of military spirit. Such spirit and skill are crucial in maintaining the patriotic values of a nation," he said.
In recognition of his contributions, Nalapraya was bestowed the Bintang Mahaputera (Star of Mahaputera), the second-highest award given by the Indonesian government, on August 10, 2010, for his extraordinary service to the nation.
On Tuesday, President Prabowo extended his condolences on behalf of the government as well as the Indonesian and international Pencak Silat communities over the passing of Nalapraya.
"Farewell, Mr. Eddie. Return to the Allah the Almighty. To Him we pray, from Him we seek help, and to Him we shall ultimately return," the President said.
