Indonesian Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya hosted French Ambassador to Indonesia Fabien Penone at his office on Tuesday (May 13) to coordinate French President Emmanuel Macron's planned visit to Indonesia this month.
In his office's statement cited in Jakarta, Wijaya stated that Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto is set to welcome his French counterpart for a bilateral meeting between May 27 and 29.
"President Prabowo and President Macron last met at a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Brazil in November last year," he remarked.
The official then emphasized the significance of the planned visit, stressing that France reserves a permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council, which grants it a veto, and ranks as the world's seventh-largest economy.
Wijaya also expressed hope that his meeting with Ambassador Penon would "serve as a crucial momentum for Indonesia and France to step up their bilateral ties in various sectors."
Based on information compiled by ANTARA, President Prabowo is expected to invite the French head of state to visit the Indonesian Military Academy in Magelang, Central Java.
According to a release from TNI's Information Center, Commander of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) General Agus Subiyanto conducted a first-hand inspection of the academy's readiness on May 9.
In preparation for welcoming Macron, the academy offered an intensive French language course to 104 soldiers from the army, navy, and air force.
Macron's intent to embark on an official visit to Indonesia was confirmed by Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono and French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Noel Barrot after a meeting in Jakarta on March 26.
Subsequently, Prabowo and Macron engaged in a telephone conversation on April 4, two days after US President Donald Trump announced reciprocal tariffs that affect Indonesia, the European Union, and others.
"In my discussion with French President Emmanuel Macron, we agreed to continue promoting inclusive and sustainable economic development for the welfare of our people," Prabowo noted in a post on his Instagram account @prabowo the following day.
Separately, President Macron also posted about his conversation with the Indonesian president on his official social media account @EmmanuelMacron.
He noted that both countries aim for stronger cooperation in defense, economic, cultural, and educational fields.
"This historic approach we are preparing will come into realization during my state visit to Indonesia at the end of May," Macron stated.
