"Indonesia is currently facing a major challenge in dealing with the climate crisis," Director of Climate Change Control Resources Mobilization at the Ministry of Environment, Franky Zamzani, stated during an online discussion event on Wednesday.
According to Zamzani, a long-term strategy is necessary to ensure Indonesia's younger generation develops into climate-resilient and environmentally conscious individuals.
"One of the important and urgent strategies is the integration of environmental education, especially into the curriculum, which is called climate change education," he remarked.
He highlighted that major changes begin with education and positive habits nurtured at home, starting with small actions such as reducing single-use plastic bottles and using public transportation.
On the same occasion, Head of the Learning Working Team of the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education Nur Rofika Ayu Shinta noted that the curriculum serves as a tool for the government to prepare a generation resilient to the impacts of the climate crisis.
In collaboration with UNESCO, the government aims not only to reach students but also to increase the capacity of schools and teachers in environmental and climate change education, as well as engage the broader community.
"Through the curriculum, we hope to enable students to take their own actions and contribute to reducing emissions. We are not demanding something big. It can start from small steps that students can take in their daily activities," she explained.
Shinta further noted that climate change education in the curriculum also helps students seize opportunities in the green economy sector and provides a foundation for developing relevant skills in that field.
