Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia and Norway have forged an agreement to deepen environmental diplomacy and actively cooperate on mitigating climate change, preserving nature, and advancing sustainable development.

According to a statement released by the Environment Ministry in Jakarta on Sunday, Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq and Norway’s Minister of Climate and Environment, Andreas Bjelland Eriksen, signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) during a working visit to Oslo.

“Strengthening the implementation of carbon economic values is vital for Indonesia to achieve its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) targets,” Nurofiq stated.

He noted that Indonesia and Norway have jointly developed a robust carbon trading system to support national climate goals.

The signing of the LoI, he added, marks a significant step in accelerating global efforts to combat climate change and promote sustainable development worldwide.

The LoI outlines a shared commitment to enhance collaboration on climate change mitigation and adaptation, good governance, biodiversity conservation, peatland and mangrove ecosystem preservation, waste management, and the circular economy.

This agreement underscores the urgency of global climate action and highlights Norway’s crucial role as a strategic partner for Indonesia in addressing the escalating environmental crisis, the ministry stated.

Nurofiq's visit coincided with the 75th anniversary of strong diplomatic ties between Indonesia and Norway, established in 1950 with a strong emphasis on environmental cooperation.

Since 2022, Norway has supported Indonesia’s efforts to reduce emissions from the forestry and land use (FOLU) sector with a committed funding of US$216 million.

During his visit, Minister Nurofiq also engaged in talks with Andreas Motzfeld Kravik, State Secretary of the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and visited TOMRA, a recycling company, to observe innovations in waste management and the implementation of the circular economy.
