Jakarta (ANTARA) - Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (P2MI) Minister Abdul Kadir Karding discussed opportunities for migrant workers' placement in Sarawak, Malaysia during a meeting with Sarawak's Food Industry, Commodities, and Regional Development Minister, Stephen Rundi Anak Utom.

At a meeting held at the Dewan Undangan Negeri Building, Malaysia, on Thursday, they discussed cooperation to expand the placement of Indonesian workers in Sarawak, whose numbers are now quite large, according to a written statement from the Ministry of P2MI in Jakarta, Thursday.

Karding stated that Stephen agreed to increase employment opportunities for Indonesian migrant workers in Sarawak in sectors other than agriculture.

"We also agreed to encourage new employment, not only in agriculture but also in other sectors such as veterinary medicine, engineering, and other fields needed by Sarawak," he remarked.

Karding noted that Indonesia has a workforce of 152.2 million and that the Ministry of P2MI is ready to send skilled workers to Sarawak.

In addition to discussing the expansion of placement opportunities, Karding addressed the protection of migrant workers and encouraged the Sarawak government to help minimize the departure of nonprocedural migrant workers.

Meanwhile, Stephen stated that Sarawak needs skilled and professional workers, such as veterinarians and mechanics from Indonesia, to jointly build it into an advanced region.

The Sarawak minister also expressed his intention to visit Indonesia soon to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on expanding the placement of Indonesian migrant workers in Sarawak.
