“ASEAN’s strength is its unity."Jakarta (ANTARA) - Foreign Affairs Minister Sugiono emphasized Indonesia's commitment to encouraging a peaceful resolution of the Myanmar crisis.
He conveyed this at the Extended Informal Consultation on the Implementation of the Five-Point Consensus held as part of the 46th ASEAN Summit on Saturday (May 24), at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center, Malaysia.
"Indonesia remains committed to encouraging a peaceful resolution in Myanmar. Regional stability can only be achieved if ASEAN unites and acts based on the principles of consensus and solidarity," he remarked in a statement on Sunday.
He then reiterated the importance of fully implementing ASEAN's Five-Point Consensus (5PC) — an agreement after the Myanmar military coup in 2021 — by focusing on ending violence, expanding humanitarian assistance, and ensuring inclusive dialogue involving all stakeholders in Myanmar.
Sugiono also expressed his support for various initiatives taken by Malaysia, as the ASEAN Chair this year, in facilitating the process of resolving the internal conflict in Myanmar, as well as Indonesia's readiness to continue contributing to the restoration of democracy and stability in Myanmar.
“ASEAN’s strength is its unity. In facing the Myanmar crisis, we must speak with one voice and act with one purpose to encourage the full implementation of the 5PC,” he emphasized.
The Extended Informal Consultation on the Implementation of the Five-Point Consensus is an informal forum that brings together ASEAN Foreign Ministers and the Special Envoy to Myanmar.
The meeting aims to discuss the developments in Myanmar and push for a more effective implementation of the Five-Point Consensus.
The civil war in Myanmar has been going on since 2021, when the military orchestrated a coup against the legitimate democratic government and arrested Aung San Suu Kyi.
The military coup prompted civilians in Myanmar to join armed guerrilla groups to fight the military and overthrow the military junta government.
Several ethnic groups in Myanmar are also fighting the military for independence from the nation.
