As many as 63 business entities were prosecuted in 2023, 44 business entities in 2024, and 9 business entities in 2025, the ministry's deputy for environmental law enforcement, Rizal Irawan stated.
"We have made law enforcement efforts against several activities that may contribute to air pollution," he said here on Wednesday.
Irawan informed that operations have been halted and environmental legal processes initiated at all 9 industries.
The industries include metal smelters PT SAS in Bekasi Regency; PT SDS in Tangerang city; and PT XAI, PT PSM, and PT PSI in Tangerang Regency.
They further comprise tofu manufacturer PT JF in South Tangerang city, textile industry PT RIC in Bogor Regency, B3 waste smelter PT ALP in Tangerang Regency, and PT YR, which is engaged in non-ferrous metal extrusion, in Tangerang Regency.
The Ministry of Environment will also carry out intensive supervision and take firm action against air polluters by slapping administrative, civil, and criminal sanctions, using a multi-door approach (integrating various types of sanctions).
According to the ministry's director of air quality protection and management, Edward Nixon Pakpahan, in the period from May 1 to June 3, 2025, the Greater Jakarta area recorded an increasing level of PM 2.5 at 35 spots.
Such particulate matter that can increase the risk of health problems put the area's air quality in the yellow category, he added.
The increase in the PM 2.5 particles was caused by vehicle emissions, industry, and waste burning.
Therefore, he asked regional governments to continue with intensive supervision and impose sanctions on industries, according to their authority.
"The most dominant air pollutant is from the transportation sector, meaning emissions released by motor vehicles that use fuel with fairly high sulfur quality," he informed.
According to Pakpahan, taking action against emission contributor sectors is the right step to ease air pollution in the Greater Jakarta area.
It is hoped that the proportional sanctions, enforced in cooperation with the regional government, would also help improve air quality, he said.
