"The primary combat function positions the TNI-AD as a military force that is always ready to repel armed threats against the country's sovereignty," Head of the TNI-AD's Information Office, Brig. Gen. Wahyu Yudhayana, told ANTARA in Jakarta on Monday.
He further explained that the TNI-AD also works alongside communities to protect Indonesia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, highlighting the army's unique people-based defense concept.
"This concept promotes synergy among the nation’s main, reserve, and supporting defense components in safeguarding the integrity of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia from both physical and non-physical threats," he explained.
Yudhayana noted that the army also undertakes non-combat operations to support public welfare, most notably disaster relief missions.
In this context, he emphasized that the Military Law authorizes the TNI-AD to assist the government in its development efforts.
"One of our core non-combat mandates is to support regional governments in implementing national development programs that directly affect people’s welfare," he remarked, noting that contributing to development is also a means of reinforcing national sovereignty.
The brigadier general stressed that equitable development across all regions is vital for improving people’s living standards, which in turn reinforces Indonesia's sovereignty.
However, Yudhayana clarified that the army only plays a supporting role in this area and remains committed to upholding civil supremacy.
"In this regard, the TNI-AD is not the main executor but acts as a supporting force for development, particularly in regions where civilian elements may face access-related challenges," he affirmed.
He expressed hope that through its broad scope of functions, the TNI-AD can continue to deliver meaningful benefits to the community.
