Palu (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Migrant Workers Protection (P2MI) Ministry and Alkhairaat University (Unisa) in Palu inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) concerning the governance and protection of Indonesian migrant workers (PMI).

"This cooperation is expected to produce excellent human resources (HR) from Central Sulawesi, who are ready to work abroad with maximum protection and broad opportunities," P2MI Minister Abdul Kadir Karding stated in Palu on Monday.

The cooperation aims to strengthen synergy in developing education, training, and placement of quality, globally competitive migrant workers.

During an open dialogue session with students, Karding emphasized the importance of changing perceptions regarding migrant workers. He noted that the term ''migrant worker'' is not limited to household assistants or the informal sector.

"You should not view migrant workers solely as domestic helpers or household assistants," Karding stated.

He noted that Finance Minister Sri Mulyani had once worked at the IMF, which also classifies her as a migrant worker. Even athletes, such as Megawati, Arhan, and Asnawi, who play abroad, are considered migrant workers.

"Mr. Habibie, who worked as an engineer in Germany, is also a migrant worker," he remarked.

He explained that the prevailing misperception in society about migrant workers so far has narrowed the meaning and significant potential of labor migration.

In fact, Indonesian migrant workers also bring honor to the nation and serve as agents of social and economic transformation, both within their families and communities of origin.

Karding emphasized that the P2MI Ministry is not only present to provide legal and social protection for migrant workers but also to build dignity, shift public perceptions, and encourage the regeneration of Indonesian human resources that are internationally competitive.
