Klungkung, Bali (ANTARA) - The National Nutrition Agency (BGN) held an event on Nusa Penida Island, Klungkung, Bali, on Monday to educate the public about how the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) program can help prevent stunting.

“Implementing the MBG program can improve the quality of nutrition (in the community),” BGN expert staff Mochammad Halim said here at the event, which was organized in collaboration with the House of Representatives (DPR).

He explained that the MBG program has a direct impact on children’s learning abilities, enhances their nutritional quality, and contributes to the development of human resources.

The MBG program is also creating a domino effect and benefiting the local economy, he added.

The presence of MBG kitchens or nutrition fulfillment service units (SPPG) has opened up opportunities for cooperation with farmers, fishermen, and small business actors such as vegetable, fruit, fish, and poultry vendors.

Each SPPG kitchen is managed by a head, who is appointed directly by the National Nutrition Agency. The SPPG head collaborates with a nutritionist and an accountant to ensure quality control and the smooth distribution of food.

“Each SPPG employs approximately 45–50 staff members responsible for preparing meals,” he said.

Meanwhile, the educational event in Nusa Penida, held at the community hall Kertha Buana village, was attended by legislator Tutik Kusuma Wardhani.

She explained that the MBG program is among the government’s efforts to improve the quality of human resources through nutritional strengthening. It is especially focusing on schoolchildren, she noted.

“This program also aims to empower micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), boost people’s economy, and foster more inclusive economic growth,” she said.

Klungkung district authorities and the BGN have been working to expedite the establishment of public kitchens. At least 12 kitchens are needed to serve more than 48 thousand students in the area.
