Jakarta (ANTARA) - Four private schools in West Jakarta will become a pilot project for the free elementary and junior high school program as mandated by a recent Constitutional Court (MK) ruling, a government official said.

Head of the West Jakarta Region II Education Office Diding Wahyudin said the schools are located in the Grogol Petamburan and Kebon Jeruk Subdistricts.

"They are SMP Al-Hasanah (North Sukabumi), SMP Al Inayah (South Kedoya), SMAS Budi Murni 2 (South Kedoya), and SMKS Maarif Jakarta (Grogol)," he informed in Jakarta on Tuesday.

He, however, did not reveal when the pilot project will begin, saying the regulations on free education are still awaited from the government.

"Still waiting the process completing of regulations of free school," he said.

On Tuesday, May 27, 2025, the Constitutional Court ruled that the central and regional governments must provide free basic education at elementary, junior high, and madrasah or equivalent educational institutions. The ruling applies to both public and private schools.

"Granting the petitioners' request in part," Chief Justice Suhartoyo said while reading out Decision Number 3/PUU-XXII/2024 at the MK.

The court said that the phrase "compulsory education at least at the elementary education level without charging fees" in Article 34 Paragraph (2) of Law Number 20 of 2003 regarding the National Education System (Sisdiknas) has led to multiple interpretations and discriminatory treatment, in contravention to the 1945 Constitution.
