Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Ministry of Defense and the Turkish Secretariat of Defence Industries (SSB) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for cooperation on the purchase of KAAN fifth-generation fighter jets produced by Turkish Aerospace Industries.

The MoU for the KAAN procurement was inked by Indonesian Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin and President of the Turkish SSB, Prof. Haluk Gorgun, at the Indo Defence Expo & Forum, Jakarta, Wednesday (June 11), where Turkey was a participant.

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto was also present to witness the signing of the MoU.

KAAN is the first fighter jet to be fully developed and manufactured in Turkey.

The fighter jet features fifth-generation capabilities, including stealth, high maneuverability, supercruise, low radar visibility, adaptable avionic architecture, enhanced situational awareness, precision targeting, and interoperability.

Development of the KAAN began in June 2019, with production of the first prototype starting in March 2022.

During the period between May 2022 and November 2022, the aircraft's components were completed, and the final assembly was completed in November 2022. Intensive system testing followed in December 2022, and in January 2023, the first KAAN prototype was unveiled to the public.

According to Turkish Aerospace Industries, KAAN can deploy all missiles and munitions produced in Turkey, allowing it to address both air and air-to-ground threats.

KAAN has a maximum speed of up to Mach 1.8, a service ceiling of up to 55,000 feet, G limits of +9g/-3.5g, internal weapons bays, supercruise capability, reduced radar signature, multi-mission profiles, and both air-to-air and air-to-ground combat capabilities.

At the same venue, on a separate occasion, state-owned aircraft manufacturer PT Dirgantara Indonesia and Turkish Aerospace Industries also signed a cooperation framework (FA) document related to KAAN.
