Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia has a renewable energy potential of 3,700 gigawatts (GW), but the current installed capacity is only about 15 GW, according to Investment and Downstreaming Minister Rosan Perkasa Roeslani.

"Hence, less than one percent has been installed," he remarked at the 2025 International Conference on Infrastructure (ICI) in Jakarta on Thursday (June 12).

Renewable energy sources include solar power, hydropower, biomass, and geothermal, with geothermal offering the greatest potential, most of which is in Java and Sumatra.

Geothermal is seen as a highly attractive investment, as Indonesia is one of the countries with the largest geothermal reserves in the world, though this resource has not yet been optimally utilized, Roeslani noted.

To address this, the Ministry of Investment and Downstreaming is pushing to accelerate renewable energy development by reforming policies and reducing costs that burden investors in the clean energy sector.

"We have actually started by creating the 2021 Omnibus Law, and we will continue to carry out reforms so Indonesia's investment climate will improve," he remarked.

He emphasized that this vast potential must be realized quickly; otherwise, it will become a missed opportunity and cause Indonesia to lag behind in energy transition—which is now a global focus.

Investment in the renewable energy sector is considered strategic to create new environmentally-friendly jobs and strengthen national energy resilience from local resources.

Roeslani invited domestic and global investors to make the most of this momentum and work together to build clean energy projects in Indonesia, particularly in areas with high potential but limited access.

"Hence, now, we are building a task force to carry out deregulation, ensuring that we can have a better investment climate and also accelerate investment in Indonesia. Otherwise, this potential will remain unrealized," he concluded.
