Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Speaker of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Bambang Wuryanto urged the government to be wary of the economic impact of the Israel-Iran conflict, which could trigger an increase in global oil prices.

Wuryanto made this statement to the press at the Parliamentary Complex, Jakarta, on Monday, according to a statement received on Tuesday.

According to the MPR deputy speaker, volatility in the oil market could strengthen the US dollar and weaken the currencies of developing countries, including Indonesia’s rupiah.

Nevertheless, he assessed that the impact of the Israel-Iran conflict on Indonesia’s oil supply would not be significant, as Iran primarily exports heavy crude oil, which only certain refineries can process.

“It means that technically, the direct impact on our refineries is not significant,” he remarked.

Furthermore, he emphasized that the state-run oil and gas company Pertamina should be prepared with various scenarios, including potential fluctuations in global oil prices due to the conflict.

Wuryanto also affirmed that he would discuss the direction of national energy policies, including the energy self-sufficiency goal, with Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia.

Earlier, the Presidential Communication Office (PCO) stated that the Indonesian government is committed to consistently supporting global peace efforts, including in responding to the escalating conflict between Iran and Israel.

“In every conflict, Indonesia’s stance is always the same: condemning military aggression, encouraging de-escalation and ceasefire, and calling for a resolution through diplomacy and international law,” PCO head Hasan Nasbi remarked here on Monday.

Nasbi emphasized that this stance applies not only to the current Iran-Israel tensions but also to any form of invasion or cross-border attack in the world.

Regarding the impact of the Iran-Israel conflict on global oil prices, he affirmed that the government continues to track global developments closely.
