Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government is stepping up efforts to strengthen bilateral cooperation with Russia in the fields of higher education, mineral research, and mining technology, a cabinet member stated.

To this end, Higher Education, Science, and Technology Minister Brian Yuliarto visited Russia's Saint Petersburg Mining University (SPMU) on Wednesday to explore potential areas for collaboration.

His visit to Russia's first higher technical education institution reflected Indonesia's commitment to advancing its education diplomacy and broadening its global partnership.

A press statement from the ministry published here on Thursday noted that Minister Yuliarto, accompanied by SPMU's Vice-Rector for International Affairs, Evgeniy A. Lyubin, toured the campus.

During the campus tour, he observed the university's laboratories and research centers of excellence and met with Indonesian students pursuing higher education at SPMU.

Minister Yuliarto also visited the university's mining museum, which stores and showcases its recorded contribution to the world's significant developments in mining technology since the 18th century.

According to the ministry's statement, Lyubin expressed SPMU's readiness to collaborate with universities in Indonesia.

Minister Yuliarto discussed possible areas for cooperation with the university's rector, Vladimir Stefanovich Litvinenko, during the meeting.

They discussed strategic initiatives such as the joint research program on mining and mainstreaming topics, the visiting professor scheme-based exchange program, and capacity building through inter-institutional collaboration.

Litvinenko noted that the joint-research collaboration on mining is worth noting, given Indonesia's vast mineral reserves, according to the ministry's statement.

To follow up on his meeting with Minister Yuliarto, Litvinenko said his side is prepared to visit Indonesia to discuss concrete collaborations with Indonesian universities, according to the statement.

According to SPMU's official website, the university was founded on October 23, 1773, making it Russia's first higher technical education institution.

The university collaborates not only with oil, gas, and mining companies but also with several governments worldwide.
