Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Manpower are collaborating to improve the capacity of human resources in the tourism sector.

The cooperation was formalized with the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana and Manpower Minister Yassierli in Jakarta on Friday.

"This is our joint commitment to building a tourism ecosystem that is more fair and competitive with support from the Ministry of Manpower," Wardhana noted in her ministry's press statement on Saturday.

The cooperation between the two ministries encompasses increasing the capacity of tourism human resources and institutions, exchanging data and information, facilitating workforce placement, expanding job opportunities in the tourism sector, and more.

"We hope it will be the starting point for a structured, sustainable, and impactful collaboration, not only for tourism development but also for improving the quality of life of Indonesians," she affirmed

The minister noted that by the end of 2024, the number of tourism workers had reached 25 million.

Over half of these tourism workers are still concentrated in three main provinces on the island of Java: West Java, East Java, and Central Java.

Meanwhile, the demand for tourism workers is projected to rise alongside the growth of tourism businesses in regions.

To this end, she emphasized the importance of ensuring an adequate supply of a competent workforce in various regions.

In the initial phase, the human resource development program implemented by the two ministries will cover several destinations: Lake Toba in North Sumatra, Labuan Bajo in East Nusa Tenggara, Borobudur Temple in Central Java, Prambanan Temple in Yogyakarta, and Lombok-Gili Tramena in West Nusa Tenggara.

Minister Yassierli affirmed that collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism also involves mapping the needs of tourism workers in destinations targeted by the government's tourism development initiatives.

To support the development and capacity building of tourism workers, the Ministry of Manpower operates four Vocational and Productivity Development Centers (BPVP) offering tourism-related programs that can be synergized with the Tourism Polytechnics under the Ministry of Tourism.
