Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Tourism Ministry has designated Banyuwangi in East Java as a pilot site for the Clean Tourism Movement (GWB), recognizing the local government's consistent application of community-based environmental management to promote tourism.

"Banyuwangi was chosen as the pilot site for its success in building collaboration to promote tourism," Deputy for Destination Development and Infrastructure at the Ministry of Tourism, Hariyanto, noted as quoted in the ministry's statement in Jakarta on Saturday.

Banyuwangi is regarded as having implemented best practices in waste management and as a model for socio-ecological transformation within the tourism sector.

Hariyanto said the GWB aims to develop tourist destinations that are clean, healthy, and competitive.

"Collaboration like this is key to building destinations that are not only visually attractive but also environmentally sustainable," he stated.

He also noted that GWB demonstrates how the public and private sectors can work together to create a positive impact on the community and the tourism ecosystem.

During the launch of the Clean Tourism Initiative at Grand Watu Dodol Beach, Banyuwangi, on Tuesday (June 17), Hariyanto stated that Banyuwangi and 16 other villages were encouraged to serve as national pilot sites for realizing quality and sustainable tourism.

Meanwhile, Head of the East Java Provincial Culture and Tourism Office, Evy Afianasari, stated that the local government is fostering synergy and cross-sector collaboration to achieve sustainable tourism.

"Banyuwangi is a real example of how this collaboration can bring about positive changes that have a broad impact," Afianasari remarked.

Similarly, Banyuwangi Regent Ipuk Fiestiandani stated that the spirit of mutual cooperation and environmental responsibility has become ingrained in the Banyuwangi community's culture in welcoming tourists.
