This is considering that the types of new psychoactive substances (NPS) have increased significantly around the world, it explained.
Head of prevention and community empowerment at the BNN-Depok Office, Purwoko Nugroho, said that there is a need to revise the drug law to provide BNN and other law enforcement agencies additional legal basis to fight drug crimes.
Speaking in Depok, West Java, on Friday, he said that, as of June 2025, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has recorded 1,350 types of new psychoactive substances (NPS) around the world.
Of them, 172 have been found circulating in Indonesia, Nugroho said.
However, only 167 of the 172 NPS types are regulated by the Health Ministry’s regulations, namely No.30/2023 on Revised Classification of Narcotics and No.31/2023 on Revised Classification of Psychotropic Substances, he informed.
To prevent people at large, particularly students, from getting dragged into drug addiction and abuse, the BNN is continuing to carry out public education and awareness campaigns on drug abuse and its impact on health.
Under the public education program, BNN officers are delivering insightful information on various types of NPS that community members must avoid for the sake of their health and own good, he said.
As reported earlier, drug lords still see Indonesia as a potential market due to its vast population and millions of drug users.
The value of the drug trade in the country is estimated to have reached about Rp66 trillion (around US$4.3 billion).
Consequently, Indonesia has seen drug addiction spiral into a life-threatening problem for millions of its people.
A survey conducted by the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) and the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) pegs the number of drug users in Indonesia at 3.4 million.
As per the survey, around 180 out of every 10 thousand Indonesians, aged between 15 and 64 years, have fallen prey to drug addiction.
