He underlined that the government should focus on the sustainability of domestic livestock farming by creating policies that protect and strengthen local production.
"We support the government's efforts in ensuring national beef and milk availability. However, do not let dependence on imports kill off the livelihoods of smallholder farmers," Ganinduto noted in his statement in Jakarta on Monday.
He highlighted that the state's support for local farmers can be in the form of involving cooperatives and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the cattle import plan.
The House member noted that the relevant ministry can allocate a quota for cooperatives and MSMEs, enabling them to grow into independent and established businesses.
Ganinduto recommended that the government continue to build a sustainable national livestock system, including prioritizing the breeding of superior local cattle and providing adequate land and feed through synergy between central and regional governments.
He stressed that the import plan and policies should be implemented in a transparent and accountable manner.
In addition, he pointed out that the cattle import policy is only a short-term solution and that strengthening the domestic food industry should remain the main priority.
Furthermore, he emphasized that the cattle import policy should be an emergency measure followed by a clear roadmap toward national livestock resilience, self-sufficiency, and accountable import governance.
"We are ready to oversee this strategic policy to ensure it not only supports price stability but also advances the nation's long-term goal of being self-sufficient in terms of food," he remarked.
