“Ninety-seven evacuees who are already in Baku, Azerbaijan, will be repatriated in stages using commercial aircraft,” director of protection of Indonesian citizens at the ministry, Judha Nugraha, said in a written statement released to the media here on Monday.
The evacuees consist of 96 Indonesian citizens (including 3 embassy staff), and 1 foreign citizen, who is an Iranian national and the spouse of an Indonesian citizen.
Under the first stage, 29 evacuees were scheduled to take off on Monday afternoon, Baku time.
They were expected to arrive at Soekarno-Hatta Airport in Tangerang, Banten, on Tuesday afternoon local time.
The rest will arrive in Indonesia in stages from Wednesday to Thursday.
Earlier on Monday, Foreign Minister Sugiono lauded the support provided by the Azerbaijani government for the evacuation of the 96 Indonesian citizens from Iran.
The minister conveyed this during a bilateral meeting with Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov on the sidelines of the 51st Ministerial Conference of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Istanbul, Turkey, which was held on June 21 and 22.
The evacuation of the Indonesian nationals has been carried out as an anticipatory measure following the rise in tensions in Iran due to Israeli attacks.
