Bogor (ANTARA) - The Free Nutritious Meals program’s dedicated kitchens—officially called Nutrition Fulfillment Service Units (SPPGs)—can strengthen Indonesia’s food security and economy by sourcing commodities directly from rural farmers, the National Food Agency (Bapanas) stated.

“These kitchens help create a supportive ecosystem for farmers and ranchers,” Bapanas Head Arief Prasetyo Adi said during a visit to an SPPG in Bogor, West Java, on Tuesday.

He stressed the importance of all SPPGs procuring food such as fruit, meat, and eggs from local producers in their respective regions.

Adi noted that the program not only improves nutrition but also raises living standards for rural communities.

He expressed optimism about the broader economic impact of the program, pointing out that nearly 2,000 SPPGs have been established and that the number is expected to exceed 3,000.

“We currently have around 1,900 SPPGs, and that figure could soon reach 2,500 or even 3,000,” he said.

He added that the SPPGs will also be supported by 80,000 cooperatives created under the Red and White Village Cooperatives initiative.

This integrated approach is expected to protect farmers and ranchers from losses due to oversupply and poor market absorption, Adi explained.

He also praised the National Nutrition Agency (BGN) for coordinating the SPPGs with the national food distribution system through inter-ministerial collaboration.

He noted that President Prabowo Subianto has reaffirmed his commitment to food self-sufficiency, including by expanding the role of SPPGs.

At the recent St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Adi said, Presiden Prabowo made it clear that his top priority is to ensure food self-sufficiency for the Indonesian people.

“It’s clear he is determined to strengthen rural economies,” Adi added.
