“We will continue to coordinate with the National Civil Service Agency and the Ministry of Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform,” Andrianto remarked during the launch of the "2025 Social Action Movement for Correctional Clients" here on Thursday.
He explained that the responsibilities of correctional officers will expand significantly under the new KUHP. Therefore, he emphasized the importance of providing comprehensive training for these officers.
He also expressed hope that with the additional responsibilities, officers would receive a bonus.
“We will recruit more correctional supervisors to address current shortages and prepare them through training," he explained.
He stated that the officers will be tasked with assisting correctional clients from the investigation stage through to sentencing.
Meanwhile, Chair of the University of Indonesia’s Board of Professors and one of the drafters of the new Criminal Code, Prof. Harkristuti Harkrisnowo, stated that there are currently only around 2,571 correctional officers nationwide.

According to Harkrisnowo, the ideal number of officers, especially after the new KUHP comes into effect, is around 7,800. Hence, she urged the government to significantly increase their numbers.
“I sincerely hope more correctional officers will be appointed because their responsibilities are substantial. Their duties will go beyond (supervising) community service sentences and will also include (monitoring) probation and other (sentence measures) outlined in the KUHP,” she elaborated.
One of the reforms in the new Criminal Code is the introduction of alternatives to imprisonment.
“The first is community service, the second is probation, and the third is fines. These represent a shift in the paradigm of our criminal justice system,” she explained.
