Jakarta (ANTARA) - The foreign ministers of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) welcomed the ceasefire between Israel and Iran declared on June 24, 2025.

In a statement on the situation in the Middle East, received in Jakarta on Thursday, ASEAN foreign ministers also expressed concern over the escalating tensions in the region since June 13, 2025.

“We urge all parties to respect the ceasefire and avoid further escalation of this conflict,” the statement read.

The ministers reaffirmed the obligation to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure during armed conflict, in line with international law and relevant UN Security Council resolutions.

They also expressed support for ongoing diplomatic efforts, including those led by the United Nations, to de-escalate tensions and facilitate the resumption of constructive engagement between the involved parties.

All states have an obligation to resolve differences through peaceful means and to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all nations, in accordance with international law and the UN Charter, the statement said.

ASEAN foreign ministers further reaffirmed their collective commitment to provide emergency assistance to ASEAN nationals in crisis situations, as outlined in the ASEAN Declaration on the Guidelines on Consular Assistance and the Guidelines for the Provision of Emergency Assistance by ASEAN Missions in Third Countries.

On June 24, 2025, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that Iran would uphold the ceasefire agreement with Israel as long as Israel refrains from violating its terms.

The conflict escalated after Israel launched airstrikes on several sites in Iran beginning June 13, including alleged nuclear facilities, amid claims that Tehran was nearing nuclear weapons capability—a claim Iran has strongly denied.

Iran responded with retaliatory missile and drone attacks, prompting U.S. involvement.

On June 22, the U.S. launched strikes on three Iranian nuclear sites.

After 12 days of hostilities between the two regional rivals, U.S. President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire on the evening of June 23, 2025 (local time), effectively ending the conflict.
