Semarang, Central Java (ANTARA) - Minister for the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (P2MI) Abdul Kadir Karding has established a migrant center at Diponegoro University (Undip), Semarang, to prevent human traffickers from targeting university graduates by promising high salaries.

“Victims of human trafficking lured by high salaries and unverified jobs are mostly university graduates,” he said at the inauguration of the migrant center on Thursday.

The center was inaugurated following the signing of a cooperation agreement by the director general of promotion and utilization of overseas work opportunities at the P2MI Ministry, Dwi Setiawan Susanto, and Undip rector Suharmono, in the presence of Minister Karding.

According to Karding, the migrant center was established after victims of human trafficking were found to be dominated by university graduates.

“We found 500 people who were sent home, and most of them were university graduates. Therefore, we opened this migrant center,” he said.

He informed that the center will provide information, training, and services to prospective Indonesian migrant workers.

“The migrant center will provide information, training, both soft skills or language skills, and all matters related to departure preparation. This is an ecosystem that prepares migrant workers," the minister said.

He also encouraged Undip to arrange extracurricular activities for students preparing to work abroad.

“We can open extracurricular activities for those who are interested in working abroad, such as a language class for Japanese, Korean, or English. This can help them,” he said.

Besides opening the migrant center, his ministry also organized a job fair at Undip featuring overseas vacancies.

The job fair was held to provide information to Undip students and the public on foreign job vacancies.

The public can also access information on overseas job vacancies through the website siskop2mi.bp2mi.go.id or by visiting the Indonesian Migrant Worker Protection Service Center (BP3MI) in their region.
